Since 2003, the National Association of REALTORS® has dedicated September as REALTOR® Safety Month.
Whether you’re showing a property, meeting a new client or communicating online, it’s important to ensure you have an existing personal safety protocol.
The goal of the REALTOR® Safety Program is to reduce the number of safety incidents that occur in the industry, so every REALTOR® comes home safely to his or her family every night. We will accomplish this goal together with our members by improving the Safety Culture in the industry: Talk about safety; create a safety plan and follow it; and encourage your fellow REALTORS® to do the same.
Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, its crucial to be aware of the risks and to take precautions to protect yourself.
Here are some key tips for staying safe on the job as a real estate agent:
1. Trust your instincts: If something feels off about a situation or a client, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation if necessary.
2. Always let someone know where you are: Whether you're meeting a client in person or showing a property, make sure someone knows your location and when you expect to be finished.
3. Use technology to your advantage: There are a variety of apps and tools available to real estate agents that can help enhance their safety. Consider using a personal safety app or a virtual tour tool to minimize the need for in-person showings.
4. Be aware of your surroundings: Whether you're showing a property or just walking to your car, its important to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep an eye out for potential hazards or threats.
By taking these simple steps, real estate agents can help ensure their safety on the job. Remember, safety should always be a top priority, and its up to each individual agent to take responsibility for their own well-being.
