Fair Housing Month Shines Light on Equity

The month of April is recognized as Fair Housing Month, underscoring the ongoing commitment to eradicate discriminatory housing practices across the U.S.

WASHINGTON – When the Fair Housing Act was enacted in 1968, it became pivotal to breaking down housing barriers by addressing discriminatory practices and promoting inclusive communities.

April, designated as Fair Housing Month, serves as an annual reminder of the legislation passed by President Lyndon Johnson a week after the civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated. This year marks the 56th year the civil rights law was signed.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability and familial status.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development themed this year’s Fair Housing Month as “Fair Housing: The ‘Act’ in Action.” In the coming month, HUD will be hosting various online events, including training programs.
